The Skinny on Dog Bans
What would you do if you lived in a city where your dog was banned? Over the last five years, certain breeds have attacked and killed unsuspecting victims. These canine assaults have raised serious questions about banning specific dog breeds in the following countries: the United States, Canada and the Britain.

But no other country has taken dog banning as serious as our Canadian allies. In Ontario, Canada a stringent dog ban may prohibit the ownership of a certain breed, the pit bull. Despite the fact that the "pit bullˇ¦ is not an officially recognized breed, it refers to a number of differing breeds. So, the question becomes what is a pit bull? Depending on where you live or how different kennel clubs classify a pit bull, the following dogs fall on the category:

• American pit bull terrier
• American Staffordshire terrier
• Staffordshire bull terrier
• Pit bull terrier
• Bull terrier

The above mentioned share common physical characteristics, temperaments and appearances. It is quite common for people to mistake various exotic breeds with pit bulls. Although the following canines bear a close resemblance to the pit bull, these moderately larger dogs are not:

• Cane Corso
• Dogo Argentino
• Presa Canario
• Tosa Inu

Based on the traits and look of these breeds, they fall under Ontario Canadaˇ¦s ban clause. The ruling restricts canines according to their physical characteristics and appearances. But, these breed are not the only dogs lumped into the dangerous dog category. In other parts of Canada, there are other bans on "vicious" dogs:

• Doberman
• Mastiff
• Rhodesian Ridgeback
• Rottweiler

For many dog owners, with any of the above mentioned dogs, the problem is that a dog should not be banned based on looks, alone. According to scientists, dogs are indistinguishable genetically. It becomes quite difficult to determine if a mixed-bred dog is a descendant of pit bull, Great Dane, or a mastiff, or whatever breed it is.
